Diabetes and How to Manage It
Diabetes, often known as diabetes mellitus is a disease where your pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that will convert the food in our body, mainly sugar and starches into energy that is needed in order to function normally. It is a serious and life-long disease. There are three types of Diabetes known to man today.
Diabetes Type 1
This is the type of diabetes where your pancreas does not produce insulin. This is caused by an auto-immune reaction where your body attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. People with this type of diabetes will need insulin injections for life, regular blood testing and a healthy lifestyle.
Diabetes Type 2
Type 2 Diabetes is when your body is resistant to insulin or the when the body does not produce enough insulin. This type is life-long and progressive, meaning it gets worse over time as we get older. People with type 2 diabetes are prescribed with oral insulin and are encouraged a healthy diet and physical activity.
Gestational Diabetes
This is common among expectant mothers who are producing too much hormones in their body. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy. Pregnant women who do have it are advised to control it with diet and exercise as it raises the risk of childbirth.
